Weber was on a tour promoting his latest album, I Am Not a Feminist, when he came across a video of a woman talking about her experience of domestic violence, a theme that he felt had gone too far in the past.
The singer, who was in England at the time, saw the video and immediately went into a video mode.
Weber said in a recent interview that the video, released earlier this year, was inspired by the experiences of a young woman who was repeatedly attacked by her partner, a man she met through her music career.
Webers words came as a shock to many, especially considering that the man is a convicted sex offender.
“She’s basically saying, ‘I have to do this, I have to fight for myself, because it’s not okay, it’s never okay for me to be the person who’s the one who’s going to give me a blowjob,'” Webers said.
Websaid she did not know about the video until it was released.
“I was like, ‘Wow, this is just so much more shocking to me than any video I’ve ever seen,'” she told ABC News.
“And then I saw the footage of it and I was like ‘Holy s—, I didn’t know that existed.'”
Weber, who has two daughters and two grandchildren, said he was not aware that he was contributing to the culture of violence against women.
“It’s just so disturbing to me, to see it on a video, to watch it and to hear it and see the reaction to it,” he said.
“It’s kind of shocking.”
A representative for Webers’ label, Echosmith, did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment.
A woman is shown holding a sign during a protest against domestic violence in Washington, DC on Jan. 31, 2017.
Weebly’s response to the video sparked a lot of outrage on social media.
“As a feminist I am horrified that a person with a record of criminal conduct would publicly express support for violence against men,” Webers wrote on Twitter.
“Violence against men has always been an issue that has plagued the world.
I can’t imagine how it would feel to witness someone publicly defend violence against other men.
I feel so ashamed.
This is not the kind of message that we want to send to the world.”
Weber’s wife, singer Lana Del Rey, responded to the backlash on Instagram.
“This is not what feminism is about,” she wrote.
“Violence is NEVER ok.
When you don’t have a record and you get called a liar, it is not okay.
Webers response also sparked a reaction from Webs, who went on Twitter to defend his choice to post the video.
“My intention was to educate people on what domestic violence is, how to take care of yourself and what to do if you’re in a situation like that,” he wrote.
Webs added that he does not think the video will change anything.
“I’ve done nothing wrong,” he told ABC.
“When it comes to my wife, I don’t think I’m the kind to put myself out there.”
